Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need rugby experience to become a referee?

While rugby knowledge helps, you don't need to have played rugby to become a referee. The Introduction to Refereeing Course will teach you the fundamentals, and ORRA provides ongoing training and support.

How fit do I need to be?

Basic fitness is required, but you'll build fitness as you go. We have different fitness standards for different levels. Starting referees begin with lower-grade matches that are less physically demanding.

How much time commitment is required?

This varies based on your availability and goals. Most referees officiate 1-2 matches per weekend during the season (April-September), plus occasional training sessions. You control your availability.

What ages of rugby will I be refereeing?

New referees typically start with junior grades (under-13s, under-15s) or social adult matches. As you develop, you can progress to more senior grades.

Can I referee if I'm still playing?

Absolutely! Many referees also play rugby. You can indicate your playing commitments when setting your availability for appointments.

What equipment do I need?

Essential equipment includes a whistle, referee cards (yellow/red), watch, and appropriate clothing. ORRA can provide guidance on where to purchase referee gear, and some items may be available through the association.
